These specialized editions, called ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are accessible via GenAI.mil, a secure centralized platform launched last year that also features Google’s Gemini. This portal is designed to provide the Department of Defense (DoD) personnel with access to leading commercial AI technologies while protecting sensitive information by exempting these government-specific tools from typical consumer data collection practices. Over 1.7 million of the department’s 3 million personnel have already engaged with the platform.

ChatGPT Mil, launched under OpenAI’s "OpenAI for Government" program, offers functions familiar to users of the commercial offering, focusing on chat interactions, document handling, and routine unclassified tasks such as logistics, planning, and policy work. Meanwhile, Grok for Government, powered by SpaceX’s Starshield AI—which combines Starlink satellite technology with secure AI—brings enhanced productivity and mission efficiency to military operations. The DoD highlights Grok’s utility in rapidly executing complex tasks across operational contexts, including acquisition market research and supply-chain management.

The rollout of these custom AI tools is part of the Pentagon’s wider strategy to leverage artificial intelligence to boost efficiency and maintain operational advantages, all while safeguarding data security. The absence of Anthropic’s Claude AI model reflects ongoing tensions stemming from the company’s refusal to provide the Pentagon unrestricted access without safety constraints; Anthropic remains legally challenging its designation as a supply-chain risk by previous administrations. Meanwhile, the department continues to secure partnerships with major tech firms like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI to enhance its AI capabilities on classified networks.
