Reliance Industries is taking its streaming service JioHotstar international for the first time, replacing the Hotstar brand in the U.K., Canada, and Singapore starting September 2, 2026. The new launch offers a vast library of over 160,000 hours of entertainment content, including Indian films, TV originals, and popular reality shows like “Bigg Boss.” However, unlike its Indian version, JioHotstar will not include live sports such as the Indian Premier League or English Premier League due to existing content agreements, although sports content could be added later.
This global expansion marks a shift from JioHotstar’s massive Indian presence where sports have been a major driver, with over 500 million monthly active users tuning in for cricket and other sporting events. Internationally, the service will provide live TV channels under the Star banner with programming available in 12 languages, including Hindi, English, Gujarati, and Malayalam. The service aims to appeal not only to the South Asian diaspora but also to a broader global audience interested in diverse cultural content beyond Indian entertainment.
JioHotstar subscriptions are priced at £19.99 quarterly and £69.99 annually in the U.K., CA$19.99 quarterly and CA$49.99 annually in Canada, and SG$29.98 quarterly and SG$69.98 annually in Singapore, mirroring Hotstar's previous pricing but without sports. Users transitioning from Hotstar will retain their login credentials to access JioHotstar, which will be available on mobile devices via app stores and on connected TVs. The service does not launch in the United States at this time but plans to continue expanding into additional markets over time.
The launch follows Reliance’s media consolidation moves, including its $8.5 billion 2024 joint venture with Disney that merged Hotstar and JioCinema into JioHotstar for the Indian market. This merged platform currently commands 85% of India’s streaming audience. With over 4 million potential viewers in the three new countries based on Indian diaspora data, JioHotstar aims to leverage its extensive content library and partnerships to establish a strong foothold in global streaming outside India.
