MapQuest’s app surges to No. 1 in Navigation after refusing to rename Lake Ontario

MapQuest recently made headlines by refusing to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America," defying an executive order from President Donald Trump that directed the U.S. Department of the Interior to update geographic names accordingly. Instead, MapQuest decided to keep the traditional name on its maps, a move that has significantly boosted its popularity. The company announced the surge in its app downloads, with its iOS app climbing to No. 4 among all non-game apps on the U.S. App Store and becoming the top navigation app in the United States. In Canada, the MapQuest app reached No. 2 overall, highlighting its rising user base.

The decision resulted in an extraordinary spike in user engagement, with downloads increasing more than tenfold week-over-week, reaching 184,000 globally and 162,000 in the U.S. during the week starting August 24. Daily downloads also rose by 128% from August 26 to 30. Doug Berger, MapQuest’s general manager, emphasized that the company aimed to honor familiar place names and be part of the larger conversation without conforming to the mandated change. This stance impressed consumers, leading to a surge in app usage fifty times above normal levels after the announcement.

MapQuest also launched a playful online tool allowing users to rename Lake Ontario to any name they choose and share their creations on social media, echoing a similar feature introduced after Trump’s earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. The controversy around the lake’s renaming ties into wider tensions, including recent trade disputes where the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canadian goods. Meanwhile, competitors Google Maps and Apple Maps have complied with the official U.S. government directive, changing or preparing to change the name for American users while maintaining the original names for Canadian and international audiences.

Having changed ownership multiple times over its three-decade history, MapQuest is now owned by System1, an internet advertising company. The platform has seen a 29% year-over-year increase in downloads so far this year, with nearly all installs originating in the U.S. The recent surge driven by its principled stand on Lake Ontario’s name marks a significant comeback for the brand, reaffirming its relevance in the highly competitive navigation app market and resonating with users seeking familiarity and consistency in digital mapping.
