MapQuest is now the No. 1 US app after bucking Trump’s ‘Lake America’ renaming

MapQuest has reclaimed the top spot as the No. 1 app on the U.S. App Store after taking a stand against President Trump's August 27, 2026 executive order to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America." Unlike Google Maps and Apple Maps, which complied with the directive, MapQuest refused to change the lake’s name, sparking a surge in downloads driven by consumers who supported the company’s decision. This unexpected boost propelled MapQuest from No. 128 on August 28 to the No. 1 overall app by September 1, with over 1.5 million installs in the U.S. and Canada combined.

The surge was notably rapid, with more than half of MapQuest's 2026 U.S. downloads happening in the six days following the executive order. Market data indicated that daily downloads increased by 123% day-over-day and were over 50 times higher than the same period last year. MapQuest's small team has been actively responding to new users by improving features and addressing bugs based on user feedback, signaling strong engagement beyond just initial installations.

This stance differentiated MapQuest from larger Big Tech rivals like Google and Apple, who updated their mapping services based on official government sources such as the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). MapQuest’s refusal to conform also extended to other renamings, as it maintains traditional names like the Gulf of Mexico rather than "Gulf of America." The company's independence is linked to its ownership by System1, an internet advertising firm that acquired MapQuest from Verizon in 2019.

MapQuest capitalized on this moment by creatively engaging users, offering a playful tool allowing people to rename Lake Ontario with their own chosen names for sharing on social media. The company’s recent success highlights how a smaller player in the mapping app space can leverage consumer sentiment and controversy to regain relevance in a market long dominated by Google Maps and Apple Maps.
