Cardinals Shake Up Front Office in Long-Term Leadership Plan

The St. Louis Cardinals are undergoing a significant front office reorganization as part of a long-term strategy to ensure stable leadership within the family. Bill DeWitt Jr., the longtime team owner, announced changes aimed at succession planning as he approaches 84 years old. His son, Bill DeWitt III, has been promoted from team president to CEO and will now oversee both baseball and business operations. Meanwhile, Anuk Karunaratne steps into the president role formerly held by DeWitt III, with Chaim Bloom continuing as president of baseball operations.

The Cardinals have a storied history of success under Bill DeWitt Jr., who has been chairman since 1996. During this period, the club won two World Series titles, four National League pennants, and made 17 playoff appearances. They have also been strong on the business side, with consistent attendance records and development projects such as the opening of the new Busch Stadium in 2006 and the influential Ballpark Village district. DeWitt Jr. is also well-connected in MLB circles, having worked closely with commissioners Bud Selig and Rob Manfred.

Despite this legacy, recent seasons have challenged the Cardinals. The team missed the playoffs for three consecutive years through 2025, and attendance dropped to a non-pandemic low of 2.25 million at Busch Stadium. Additionally, the collapse of the regional sports network Main Street Sports Group forced MLB to take over local game distribution. The franchise has pledged reforms to return to its winning tradition, and the early 2026 season shows promise, with the Cardinals holding a strong wild-card spot and performing well on the field, though attendance remains down 6% from last year.

The leadership shifts reflect a balance between honoring the team’s family ownership history and addressing the need for rejuvenation amid rebuilding efforts. As DeWitt Jr. retains the chairmanship and principal ownership, the younger DeWitt aims to guide the Cardinals forward with fresh leadership in key roles. Club president Anuk Karunaratne emphasizes the importance of earning fan support every day, signaling a renewed focus on reconnecting with the Cardinals’ passionate fanbase as they strive for future success.
