The NBA has handed down harsh sanctions to the LA Clippers, Kawhi Leonard, and Leonard's uncle Dennis Robertson for violations involving salary cap circumvention. Additionally, key personnel will be suspended: owner Steve Ballmer and president of business operations Gillian Zucker for one year each (with Zucker’s suspension unpaid), and basketball operations president Lawrence Frank for six months without pay. Leonard was fined $700,000, while Robertson was banned from all NBA business for five years.

This string of penalties follows an NBA investigation initiated after a podcast revealed questionable endorsement deals between Leonard and the Clippers, including a $28 million contract with the now-defunct Aspiration company. The league’s findings indicated that the Clippers orchestrated endorsement arrangements with multiple entities such as Aspiration, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics, and Lockton Insurance, while also covering personal expenses for Leonard and his representatives. Commissioner Adam Silver condemned the organization’s "institutional failures" and "flagrant violations," underscoring the seriousness of these infractions.

The report highlighted that Ballmer was directly involved, approving endorsement strategies intended to benefit Leonard financially outside the salary cap rules. Zucker was held chiefly responsible for the improper endorsement deals and misled NBA investigators, whereas Frank was also complicit in approving unauthorized expenses. Leonard, traded to the Toronto Raptors in June, accepted responsibility for mistakes made by those around him but denied any personal involvement or intent to violate league rules. The Clippers refuted the NBA’s conclusions, vowing to challenge the penalties through arbitration and claiming the investigation lacked fairness and transparency.

The penalties illustrate the NBA’s commitment to enforcing its salary cap regulations and maintaining competitive integrity. While the Raptors’ acquisition of Leonard remains unaffected, the Clippers face a challenging future given the loss of multiple valuable draft picks.
