Karl Ravech, a veteran broadcaster with ESPN for 33 years, recently made his final sign-off from the network during the 2026 Little League World Series (LLWS) in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. His departure was a result of ESPN’s July layoffs, part of a pattern of annual staff reductions amid significant subscriber losses from cord-cutting. Despite being let go, Ravech successfully petitioned to continue covering the LLWS for a final time, an event closely associated with him since he began play-by-play duties there in 2006.

ESPN, which hit its peak subscriber count of about 110 million monthly in 2011, has seen that number fall to around 60 million due to widespread cord-cutting, translating to nearly $5 billion less in annual revenue. Yet, the network remained profitable with a reported operating income of $2.9 billion in 2025. Ravech was one of several recognizable on-air personalities—such as Ryan Clark and Cam Newton—who were released, alongside about 30 behind-the-scenes staff members. Reports suggest Ravech received a salary in the low to mid-seven-figure range, though the exact terms of his contract and his negotiations post-layoff remain undisclosed.

Throughout his ESPN tenure, Ravech was a prominent baseball voice, hosting Baseball Tonight and calling Sunday Night Baseball until the rights shifted to NBC in 2026. He also covered NCAA baseball, college basketball, and anchored SportsCenter early in his career. At the LLWS in August, Ravech was honored on-field with a standing ovation and a gift from his longtime broadcast partner Eduardo Pérez, signifying his lasting impact on the event and the baseball community he has served for decades.

Despite the bittersweet farewell, Ravech expressed gratitude to ESPN and fans, acknowledging the overwhelming support he has received. He conveyed an optimistic outlook about his future, sharing with USA Today that after a short break, new opportunities will arise.
