American Airlines has unveiled a redesigned version of its Boeing 777-300ER, enhancing the premium experience on its key long-haul international routes to cities like London, Tokyo, and Sydney. The revamped aircraft configuration includes 144 premium seats, with 70 lie-flat seats equipped with sliding doors in the new Flagship Suite section located at the front of the plane. This upgrade is part of a shift away from traditional international first-class cabins toward a more unified premium offering, which the airline began introducing after overcoming supplier-related delays.
The new Flagship Suite seats are priced significantly higher than standard economy seats, capable of generating close to $10,000 on some international flights, compared to roughly $2,000 or less for economy fares. Beyond these suites, the plane also features a dedicated Premium Economy cabin with 44 seats designed for enhanced comfort, including privacy headrests and adjustable leg and footrests. Additionally, 30 Main Cabin Extra seats offer passengers more legroom, while the aircraft’s Main Cabin holds 186 standard seats. American Airlines plans to retrofit its entire fleet of 20 Boeing 777-300ERs with this improved layout by the end of next year.
This move is part of American Airlines’ broader strategy to compete more effectively with rivals like Delta and United, both of whom have already established strong footholds among high-spending travelers. Upgrading its premium cabins is a crucial component of this push to attract more affluent customers and increase revenue from long-haul international routes. The airline is also focusing on strengthening its loyalty program, improving on-time flight performance, and expanding its overall route network to bolster its competitive position.
While the 777-300ER retrofits represent a major premium service enhancement, American Airlines is also applying a similar but smaller premium cabin design to its Airbus A321XLRs. Recently, the airline announced seven additional international routes for 2027, although none will be served by the 777-300ER fleet. This continued investment signals American’s commitment to elevating the travel experience and growing its share in the lucrative international premium market.
