Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, an open-source artificial intelligence platform, for $12.9 billion, marking a significant expansion for the chipmaker into AI software. This deal represents Nvidia’s second-largest acquisition, following its $20 billion purchase of Groq assets last year, and signals a strategic move beyond hardware into broadening AI infrastructure and developer accessibility. CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that Hugging Face will continue as an open platform, enabling wider AI adoption across developers and institutions globally.
The acquisition discussions began in the summer when Hugging Face’s CEO, Clément Delangue, initiated contact with Huang, seeing Nvidia as an ideal partner to support growth at a pivotal moment for open-source AI. Delangue noted the accelerating need for increased resources and scale to advance Hugging Face’s platform, with the deal proceeding swiftly thereafter. The collaboration aligns with Nvidia’s vision of integrating open models to foster innovation and enhance the AI ecosystem.
Hugging Face recently faced a cybersecurity breach attributed to engineering errors, which Delangue addressed by leveraging an Nvidia-developed version of a Chinese open model to resolve the issue. Both Delangue and Huang highlighted that this incident underscores the value of transparent, collaborative open-source environments, granting defenders a strategic advantage against threats. Huang described this open approach as an “asymmetric advantage,” with more defenders than attackers working collectively to strengthen security.
Nvidia’s move to acquire Hugging Face solidifies its ambition to be a comprehensive AI leader, not just a chip producer. The acquisition complements its existing investments in AI technologies and chips, underscoring the company’s role in powering the generative AI revolution. As Nvidia continues to integrate key software assets, its market influence grows alongside rising demand for AI capabilities worldwide, positioning it at the forefront of the ongoing industrial transformation.
