Argentina’s President Javier Milei has intensified the longstanding conflict over the Falkland Islands by reaffirming Argentina’s claim to the territory, known locally as Las Malvinas. During a nationally broadcast speech, Milei called for national unity to reclaim the islands and announced plans to impose sanctions on companies involved in developing the Sea Lion offshore oil project, located near the Falklands. This project, run by Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum, aims to start oil production in early 2028, but Argentina views the endeavor as illegal exploitation of its claimed maritime resources.

Milei’s announcement follows comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently questioned Washington’s commitment to defend Britain in a potential future Falklands conflict. Trump indicated that the U.S. stance might shift due to Britain’s perceived lack of reciprocal support regarding U.S. military actions in Iran. Milei highlighted his close ties with Trump, suggesting that the U.S. might reconsider its neutrality on the Falklands dispute, viewing Argentina as a potentially valuable future ally.

The British government swiftly responded to Milei’s statements, with U.K. Defense Minister Wes Streeting characterizing the Argentine president’s rhetoric as motivated by domestic politics rather than a genuine shift in the territorial dispute. Streeting reaffirmed Britain’s firm commitment to the Falkland Islanders’ right to self-determination, emphasizing that the islands will remain British because the local population chooses that status. The Falklands have been under British control since 1833, though Argentina has long contested sovereignty, even engaging in war with Britain over the islands in 1982.
