Google has expanded the capabilities of its AI personal assistant, Gemini Spark, to now include comprehensive management of users' Google Photos libraries. Announced by Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yair on September 3, 2026, this update enables Gemini Spark to perform numerous tasks such as editing images, curating albums, creating shared collections of favorite photos, and even converting concert flyers into calendar events. These features are gradually rolling out over the coming weeks to U.S.-based subscribers of Gemini AI Pro and Ultra plans who use the app in English.

The new integration illustrates Google's ongoing strategy to embed AI more deeply within its consumer services, aiming to simplify routine and sometimes cumbersome tasks like organizing large photo libraries. Despite the utility, some industry observers note that such features, while convenient, are not groundbreaking innovations, since many users can manage photo albums manually without AI assistance. Nonetheless, AI firms including Google are keen to showcase incremental advancements, driven in part by intense competition within the AI market.

To utilize Gemini Spark with Google Photos, users must link their Photos account to the Gemini app, activate the Spark feature, and then submit voice or text prompts to direct the assistant’s actions.
