Why ‘Obsession’ Could Benefit From A Comedy Push At The Golden Globes

The 2027 awards season will see Focus Features pushing its horror film *Obsession* aggressively, with campaigns targeting 16 categories at major ceremonies including the Oscars. Despite its dark and dramatic content, industry experts suggest *Obsession* might find a strategic advantage by competing in comedy or musical categories at the Golden Globes. This approach is inspired by similar genre-defying moves in the past, such as with *Get Out* in 2018 and *The Substance* in 2025, both horror films that campaigned as comedies and went on to receive significant Oscar nominations.

The Golden Globes separate films into drama and comedy/musical categories, a distinction that can impact a film’s visibility and awards momentum. Drama categories tend to be much more crowded, with films like *The Odyssey*, *Michael*, and *Dune: Part Three* expected to compete strongly. By contrast, the comedy field is less saturated, offering *Obsession* a clearer path to stand out among contenders like *The Invite* and *The Debut*. This less competitive comedy category could help secure the kind of buzz necessary to propel *Obsession* into Oscar conversations.

A key factor behind this strategy is the precedent set by Demi Moore’s surprise Golden Globes win for her role in *The Substance*, a horror movie with dark humor and satirical elements, which campaigned as a comedy. Inde Navarrette’s performance in *Obsession* similarly features physicality and showmanship, positioning her as a formidable contender if the film follows suit. Such recognition at the Globes could be a critical moment to amplify *Obsession*’s awards positioning on the road to the Oscars.

Focus Features needs to finalize its submission decision by October 30, ahead of Golden Globes nomination voting from November 24 to December 4 and the nominees announcement on December 7. The decision reflects broader challenges faced by genre films in the current awards landscape, where rigid drama/comedy classifications don’t always fit. For *Obsession*, embracing comedy in this context might be the most effective path to both awards season success and broader industry recognition.
