Labor Day now signals the beginning of “fallcations,” as affluent travelers increasingly choose autumn over summer for luxury vacations. According to Virtuoso, a leading global luxury travel network, fall travel bookings and sales have surged significantly in 2026, with September sales rising 77%, October up 54%, and November jumping 71% compared to last year. This shift reflects a broader trend of wealthy individuals seeking to avoid crowded and hot summer travel periods by moving their vacations to September and October.
The change to fall travel has been driven by several factors, including climate conditions and demographic trends. Summer heat waves in Europe have made traditional peak months less appealing, while the aging baby boomer generation, along with Gen Xers and younger digital nomads, enjoy greater flexibility to travel outside the typical summer window. Experts note that these travelers prefer fall because destinations are less crowded, weather is more moderate, and they have already experienced these spots in summer.
Popular autumn destinations for wealthy American travelers remain focused in Europe, with Paris leading the list, followed by the Amalfi Coast, French Riviera, Tuscany, and New York. However, the rise in demand has started to push hotel rates during the fall to levels close to or even exceeding those typical of summer. Luxury hotel prices in hotspots like the Greek Isles, Puglia, and the French Riviera have seen increases ranging from 78% to 179%, indicating that the fall travel surge is creating new challenges for those seeking quieter, more affordable options.
Despite the higher prices and growing crowds, travelers continue to prioritize the fall season for its perceived superior experience compared to summer. Luxury travel demand has driven up the average nightly rate at premium hotels globally, now averaging $1,653 compared to $985 in 2019. Travel experts predict that this “fallcation” trend will persist, with November recommended as the best month for avoiding crowds, although bookings for that month have also risen sharply. The year-round luxury travel boom reflects the growing premium placed on exceptional travel experiences.
