The wealth of the world’s billionaires reached $15.1 trillion last year, per a new report

A recent report by Altrata reveals that the global wealth of billionaires soared to $15.1 trillion in 2025, driven primarily by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence investments. The number of billionaires reached a record 3,795, marking an 8.2% increase from the previous year—the largest growth in five years. Publicly traded companies with at least $30 million in AI investments outperformed their peers with a 23% gain in market value from 2024 to 2025, highlighting AI’s role in wealth generation.

The report highlights a significant concentration of billionaire wealth among the ultra-rich, often called “superbillionaires,” individuals with net worth exceeding $50 billion. These 29 individuals control $4.1 trillion, roughly 27% of all billionaire wealth, a sharp rise from 2017 when only 10 superbillionaires accounted for 7.2%. This growing disparity underscores how AI-fueled tech fortunes have disproportionately enriched those at the very top.

Despite the gains, the report points to volatility in paper wealth tied to AI-focused tech stocks. Many of the industry’s richest have experienced dramatic fluctuations, including Elon Musk’s $18 billion one-day net worth drop and Larry Ellison’s $50 billion decline over a week. This market turbulence reflects concentrated risk within tech and AI sectors, though it does not necessarily signify a bubble.

Regionally, North America led growth with a billionaire population of 1,337, expanding 11.6% in 2025 due to the U.S.’s strong presence in tech markets. Europe and Asia also saw rises in billionaire numbers, with 7.9% and 6.5% increases respectively. The report notes 2025 was unusually positive overall, with all major assets delivering gains despite global economic uncertainties, further bolstering billionaire fortunes.
