NFL set for first-ever game in Melbourne, Australia, in international expansion

The NFL is set to make history by hosting its first regular-season game in Melbourne, Australia, as part of an ambitious international expansion strategy. The matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers, scheduled for next week, represents the longest travel distance for two NFL teams for a game. This event is just one of nine international regular-season games slated for the 2026 season, which also includes debut games in cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Paris, alongside established locations like London, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has expressed a strong commitment to growing the sport globally, aiming to increase the number of international games to as many as 16 per season. The league’s international expansion has been supported by a structured approach known as the Global Markets Program, launched in 2022. This program assigns specific NFL teams marketing rights in various countries, helping build fandom and brand recognition. For instance, the Rams hold marketing rights in Australia, making them the de facto home team for the Melbourne game, while the 49ers hold rights in Mexico and will be the home team there later this year.

Despite the excitement, challenges remain in cultivating a larger international audience. Time zone differences mean games that are primed for American viewers often lead to inconvenient local start times overseas, which can affect viewership and fan engagement. The Melbourne game will kick off at 10:35 a.m. local time on a Friday, reflecting the NFL’s need to balance U.S. broadcast windows with international markets. Additionally, players and teams face significant travel and jet lag, as seen by the different arrival schedules of the Rams and 49ers for the Australia game.

While the NFL ranks as a top television draw in the United States, international viewership is still relatively small, highlighting the need for sustained efforts to build the global fan base. The league remains optimistic about its strategy, banking on a combination of regular international games, targeted team marketing efforts, and strategic timing to increase engagement overseas. Executives have indicated a long-term vision that includes potentially placing an NFL franchise permanently outside the U.S., underscoring the league's commitment to broadening the reach of American football worldwide.
