Diesel hits record high as Ukraine and Iran wars knock out refineries, fueling inflation worries

Diesel fuel prices have surged to record levels, reaching an average of $5.85 per gallon across the U.S., marking nearly a 60% increase compared to $3.71 per gallon this time last year. In California, the cost is even steeper, averaging $7.70 per gallon, almost $2 above the national average. This dramatic rise is driven by a sharp contraction in supply caused by the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which have severely impacted refinery operations and disruption of diesel exports.

The wars in Ukraine and Iran have damaged refineries and related infrastructure, leading to a loss of roughly 5 million barrels per day of refining capacity worldwide. Russian diesel export bans and attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz have compounded shortages, severely limiting global diesel availability. Specifically, about 8% of global demand, or 2 million barrels per day, is currently disrupted due to these conflicts, which significantly tightens supply and pushes prices higher.

Diesel plays a critical role in the economy, influencing transportation, heating, agriculture, and industrial uses, making its price fluctuations particularly impactful on inflation. Experts emphasize that rising diesel costs act like a "stealth tax," as higher fuel prices for trucks and rail transport feed directly into increased prices for goods and services that consumers rely on daily. This close linkage between diesel prices and economic inflation is a growing concern given current supply constraints.

Industry leaders from Valero and Phillips 66 have highlighted the tightening refining fundamentals amid these geopolitical tensions, noting the persistent challenges in balancing supply with global demand of 28 million barrels per day. With refinery outages in critical regions coupled with export bans, market conditions remain strained, fueling worries about ongoing inflationary pressures and the broader economic impact of elevated diesel prices.
