Horror Comedy ‘Buddy’ Tops Opening Numbers In 2nd Weekend At Box Office

The horror comedy film "Buddy," which centers on a costumed children's TV character whose facade unravels, has demonstrated impressive box office success in its second weekend. Directed by Casper Kelly and featuring a cast including Keegan-Michael Key, Cristin Milioti, and Topher Grace, the R-rated movie is projected to earn $5.7 million from September 4-6. This figure surpasses its initial weekend earnings of $5.3 million, a rare achievement for films in 2026, and notably doubles its originally forecasted debut of $2.5 million.

Set in the cheerful world of the show "It’s Buddy," where the title character spreads happiness and lessons, the movie takes a sinister turn when a child resists playing along, causing Buddy to crack and trap the children inside the show. Along with Key, the film stars Michael Shannon and Delaney Quinn, with voice talent from Patton Oswalt and Eric Bauza. Released by Roadside Attractions and Saban Films, "Buddy" opened in 1,258 theaters, marking the biggest 2026 opening for a non-franchise film on fewer than 1,800 screens and one of the strongest debuts ever for both the distributors.

"Buddy" has now amassed a domestic total of $14.2 million while still awaiting its international release. Its critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding it an 89% "fresh" rating from 123 critic reviews. The consensus highlights the film’s inventive blend of children’s entertainment tropes with horror and dark humor, appealing to both audiences and reviewers who praised its unique and creepy take on pop culture.

The film’s second-weekend uptick in sales places it alongside only one other 2026 release, the horror movie "Obsession," which experienced similar growth. This rare boost is particularly exceptional for an R-rated independent film without a franchise backing. "Buddy’s" success represents a significant accomplishment for Roadside Attractions and Saban Films, signaling strong audience interest beyond expectations and positioning the movie as one of the breakout hits of the year.
