New Angels Owner Stan Kroenke Has Already Made Nearly $20 Billion On His Sports Teams

Stan Kroenke, known as "Silent Stan," has built an extraordinary sports empire worth roughly $22 billion, excluding debt, from investments in six major teams across the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, Premier League, and Women’s Super League. This significant portfolio is poised to expand with his recent agreement to purchase a majority stake in Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels at an estimated $4 billion valuation. Kroenke's overall net worth is estimated at $27.6 billion, primarily derived from his sports holdings and vast real estate portfolio, including 2.7 million acres of ranch land.

Kroenke’s sports investments have experienced remarkable growth since their acquisition. He originally bought his six teams for about $2.4 billion ($3.8 billion adjusted for inflation), yielding nearly $20 billion in value appreciation. The Los Angeles Rams, now valued at $10.5 billion and ranked third globally among sports franchises, exemplify this success, with an 18.9% compound annual growth rate since 2010 that outpaces both NFL and S&P 500 averages. Other Kroenke-owned teams have similarly increased in value due to factors like soaring media rights, stadium modernization, and the scarcity of professional franchises.

On-field achievements have paralleled financial growth under Kroenke’s ownership. The Rams won the 2022 Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium, the Avalanche secured the Stanley Cup the same year, and the Nuggets claimed the NBA championship in 2023. Additionally, Arsenal’s men’s and women’s teams have won major titles recently, including the Premier League and FIFA Women’s Champions Cup respectively. While fan responses have been mixed, with protests in Arsenal and dissatisfaction in St. Louis over the Rams’ relocation, Angels supporters have welcomed Kroenke’s purchase after years of disappointing performance under Arte Moreno.

Kroenke’s background in real estate, notably large-scale retail and commercial developments anchored by Walmart stores, heavily influences his sports strategy. He owns major stadium assets like SoFi Stadium, Emirates Stadium, and Ball Arena, often leveraging these venues for broader development projects. His track record includes relocating the Rams and creating Hollywood Park, a $5 billion development in Inglewood that significantly increased the franchise’s value. As his son Josh takes a leadership role, Kroenke is also planning mixed-use development around Denver’s Ball Arena, hinting that stadium and area revitalization could be part of his future plans for the Angels and their aging stadium in Anaheim.
