The Exploration Company (TEC), a European aerospace startup operating across Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain, and Italy, has secured $450 million in its Series C funding round. The company touts this as the largest-ever Series C raise by a European space company. With ambitions to build reusable spacecraft and heavy-lift launchers as competitive alternatives to SpaceX’s Falcon rockets, TEC aims to meet the growing demand for orbital launches fueled by increasing space infrastructure needs and geopolitical considerations that favor European sovereignty in space.

Led by Hélène Huby, who has extensive experience at Airbus and ArianeGroup, TEC plans to use the new capital to advance the development of its Nyx reusable orbital capsule, designed for cargo and personnel transport. The company targets a mission to dock Nyx with the International Space Station before its retirement and return safely by November 2028. TEC is also investing in its Storm rocket engine program, which employs advanced full-flow staged combustion technology to increase efficiency and reusability, a first for European rocket development.

TEC’s fundraising round, co-led by Atomico and Scaleup Europe Fund alongside Bessemer Venture Partners, includes substantial commitments for future missions exceeding $2 billion. The company’s investors and partners include the European Space Agency and NASA, reinforcing its strong transatlantic ties. Despite its ambitious goals, Huby acknowledged a pragmatic approach, favoring projects with shorter timelines to appeal to venture capital, delaying prospects for human spaceflight but prioritizing scalable, reusable technology that could support Europe’s growing needs in space-based communications and infrastructure.

This milestone has drawn praise from European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, emphasizing the strategic importance of TEC’s mission to bolster Europe’s independent space capabilities. Their announcement coincided with the International Space Summit in Paris, signaling potential further initiatives. As the first European company developing such sophisticated reusable technology poised to rival SpaceX, TEC is positioning itself at the forefront of a new era of space competition and innovation on the continent.
