The hinge for Apple’s new foldable phone was built with AI

Apple has revealed its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, at the recent Surprise and Shine event. This device marks Apple's entry into the foldable phone market, a segment that has drawn significant consumer interest but has often struggled with durability issues. Recognizing this challenge, Apple focused heavily on reinforcing the phone's physical resilience, particularly through the design of its hinge, a critical component for foldable devices.

The hinge on the iPhone Duo was developed using advanced AI algorithms combined with 3D printing technology. Apple’s chief hardware officer, Johny Srouji, explained that AI is employed during manufacturing to pair each hinge with a perfectly matching housing for ideal alignment. Additionally, a confocal laser system scans each unit, while up to 25 micro layers of a custom photopolymer are 3D printed to smooth out imperfections, enhancing the hinge’s precision and durability.

Besides the hinge enhancements, Apple has introduced a custom nano-texture finish that reduces glare and reflections on the phone’s surface. The company also implemented a multilayer lamination process to further boost the device’s strength and longevity. These innovations reflect Apple’s commitment to exceeding the traditional durability limitations faced by foldable smartphones, aiming to deliver a premium and lasting user experience.

While these technologies represent a strong approach to durability, it remains to be seen how well the iPhone Duo holds up over time under typical usage conditions. Apple’s integration of AI and 3D printing into the manufacturing process could set new standards for foldable phones, potentially addressing the wear-and-tear issues that have hindered previous devices in the category. The Duo launch highlights Apple’s strategic use of cutting-edge tech to enter and perhaps redefine the foldable phone market.
