Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max during its fall "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, 2026. Although the design remains largely unchanged from previous models, the standout upgrade is the camera system. Both Pro phones now feature a 48-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture controlled by six ultra-thin blades, aimed at improving low-light photography and enhancing speed. New software controls offer users manual options such as shutter speed, white balance, aperture, and histogram. The devices can also record 4K video in Dolby HDR Vision and apply cinematic effects post-capture.
In addition to camera advancements, the iPhone 18 Pro models include a smaller dynamic island that supports tracking three live activities simultaneously compared to two in earlier models. These phones are powered by Apple's latest A20 Pro chip and have an improved cooling system thanks to a redesigned vapor chamber. Battery life has also been optimized, with the iPhone 18 Pro supporting up to 36 hours of video playback and the Pro Max offering up to 45 hours. Apple introduced a new burgundy color option and priced the devices at $1,199 for the 18 Pro and $1,299 for the 18 Pro Max, marking a $100 increase over last year.
Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro launch, Apple debuted a feature called Apple Reference Image designed to authenticate photos taken with the new camera. This feature captures sensor data alongside each photo, creating a "digital negative" that allows users and professionals to verify if images have been altered, including edits made by AI. Apple is initially providing this feature within its Photos app and releasing APIs so developers can integrate it into other apps. The company also plans to support the SynthID standard to help disclose AI-generated or edited content.
Preorders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max begin on Saturday, September 11, with devices available from September 18. Apple also announced other products such as the first foldable iPhone Duo, the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 with AI-powered listening features, and the AirPods 5, showcasing the company's continued investment in combining hardware innovation with software advancements across its ecosystem. The event marked a significant moment under new CEO John Ternus, emphasizing the iPhone’s ongoing central role in Apple's strategy amidst the evolving AI era.
