U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States will impose sanctions on a major bank next Monday as part of its ongoing strategy against Iran. Speaking on “Real America’s Voice,” Bessent did not reveal the name of the financial institution or the country to which it belongs. He noted the timing of the sanctions would honor the memory of Americans lost on September 11.
This announcement follows recent U.S. actions targeting financial entities linked to Iran. Earlier, the Trump administration sanctioned branches of Egypt’s second-largest bank in Dubai, accused of facilitating $1.8 billion in Iranian funds. Additionally, the Treasury recently sanctioned Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi, a Turkish bank ranked 30th in size, for allegedly supporting Iranian interests and closed its operations.
Since the Middle East conflict began in February, the U.S. has consistently escalated its economic pressure on Iran through various sanctions. Last month, these efforts intensified with “Operation Economic Outcast,” which targeted roughly 60 entities, vessels, and individuals connected to Iranian activities. This operation broadened the scope of secondary sanctions to include business sectors such as shipping and technology that involve Iran.
Bessent emphasized that the U.S. administration remains committed to restricting Iran’s financial networks and will continue to pursue aggressive measures. Although details about the upcoming large bank sanction were not disclosed, the move signals an ongoing, strategic effort to disrupt Iran’s access to global financial systems, reinforcing U.S. economic and security objectives in the region.
