LA Rams President Kevin Demoff touts Australia push ahead of historic NFL game

The Los Angeles Rams are preparing to play in the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game held in Australia this week, facing off against the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Rams President Kevin Demoff emphasized that the team has been building its presence in Australia over the past five years, considering the country an extension of its Los Angeles market. Since 2021, the Rams have held NFL marketing rights in Australia under the league’s Global Markets Program, enabling them to activate partnerships and local branding opportunities.

Demoff highlighted the strategic importance of Australia as a natural fit given Los Angeles’ status as a global city with many ties to the Pacific Rim. To enhance the fan experience, the Rams created a 22-yard floating football field on Melbourne’s Yarra River, accessible through their LA Tailgate event. While the Rams' players arrive just one day before the game, their opponents have already been acclimating to the 17-hour time difference, reflecting the team's broader strategy to focus on long-term market growth rather than short-term travel adjustments.

Beyond the NFL, Demoff addressed other sports business topics, including the NBA’s strong sanctions against the Los Angeles Clippers over salary cap rule violations. Although Demoff does not directly manage Clippers operations, he noted that the punishment sets a clear precedent for compliance across professional sports as leagues continue to evolve. He also spoke on Kroenke Sports and Entertainment’s recent agreement to acquire a controlling interest in MLB’s Los Angeles Angels, signaling KSE’s ambition to expand its influence across all major U.S. sports leagues.

Demoff explained that KSE’s plan for the Angels revolves not only around team performance but also the development of surrounding real estate, mirroring similar mixed-use projects established near their other stadiums. This approach aims to generate additional economic activity and improve operational processes through technology and infrastructure improvements. The deal, pending MLB approval, will give Kroenke control over some of Los Angeles' most prominent sports franchises, further consolidating the company’s presence in the city’s sports market.
