Google is making it easier to switch between password managers on Android

Google has unveiled a new feature on Android that simplifies the process of switching between different password manager apps without the cumbersome need to export and import CSV files. With this update, users can seamlessly transfer all stored passwords and passkeys directly between password managers on their devices. This process is initiated by opening the new password manager app and selecting the option to import or copy data from the existing one, prompting Android to detect and coordinate the transfer between both apps.

The enhanced system supports the migration of passkeys, allowing users to avoid having to set them up again in the new password manager. Google emphasizes that this approach improves security by eliminating the risks associated with handling CSV files, which can potentially expose sensitive information during manual transfers. Users have the ability to review the data slated for transfer and confirm it with just a few taps, making the experience both simple and secure.

Currently, the feature is live with a select group of partners, including popular password management apps such as Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane. Google’s own password manager also supports this new functionality. The company plans to expand compatibility to additional apps in the future, broadening user choice and flexibility in managing credentials across Android devices.

This password manager switching capability will be available on all Android devices running version 8 or later, covering a vast majority of Android users. By streamlining this critical security task, Google aims to enhance user convenience while encouraging better password management practices across its ecosystem. This move reflects broader industry trends toward making identity and security tools more interoperable and user-friendly.
