Khosla Ventures is opening a New York office this fall — its first outpost outside Sand Hill Road

Khosla Ventures is expanding beyond its traditional base on Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, California, by opening a new office in New York City this fall. This marks the firm’s first permanent location outside the Bay Area. The new space on 14th Street will include offices for several Khosla investors, including Keith Rabois, and feature an executive briefing center designed to facilitate frequent meetings between portfolio companies and Fortune 500 firms, fostering pilot projects and customer connections.

Keith Rabois, who recently relocated to the East Coast to be closer to his family in Washington, D.C., discussed the challenges and opportunities of building a venture presence in New York. He highlighted the city’s strong pool of junior technical talent, citing examples like the fintech company Ramp, which has effectively recruited early-career employees in the area. However, he pointed out difficulties in attracting senior engineers and executives willing to adhere to a full in-office schedule due to commuting and lifestyle constraints.

Rabois elaborated that Ramp’s strategy has been to promote from the ground up, focusing less on hiring senior executives locally and more on nurturing talent internally. He noted that many senior-level professionals struggle with the demands of living in New York City while maintaining a traditional office presence. This dynamic makes recruiting experienced executives in the area particularly challenging, despite the availability of talent on the junior side.

This move by Khosla Ventures places it among a small but growing number of prominent Bay Area venture firms that have established New York presences in recent years. The expansion follows a recent report indicating that New York has surpassed San Francisco in total tech talent headcount, driven largely by demand for AI-related hires in the finance sector. While the local tech community remains somewhat skeptical about the significance of those figures, Khosla’s New York office reflects a strategic bet on the city’s evolving role in the technology ecosystem.
