At the recent Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), Roblox unveiled new features aimed at simplifying game development and broadening the accessibility of its content. One standout introduction is the expansion of its AI-assisted game-building tool called “Build,” which enables users to create games using natural language prompts. Initially rolled out in New Zealand earlier this year, “Build” is now available in Serbia and Singapore and is coming to desktop platforms with enhanced features like an asset library, iterative controls, and a prompt-based scene-generation capability set for later in the year.
Roblox is also pushing to make games developed on its platform playable beyond Roblox itself. This year, creators will be able to release their games as standalone apps on mobile devices, PCs, and consoles, with Roblox serving as the underlying game engine. Before the year ends, users can also join games directly through web browsers via links, representing a significant step towards platform versatility. Alongside these moves, NPC functionalities are being expanded, including NPCs capable of playtesting games, and developers will be able to implement offline modes to maintain gameplay in low network areas.
On the monetization front, Roblox announced the launch of the Roblox Wallet, a financial product allowing creators to receive payments in real money at the end of each business day. The Wallet, supported initially by a partnership with Airwallex for U.S. users aged 18 and older, will eventually expand globally. Additionally, a Roblox Card is planned for release next year, enabling users to spend their earnings in stores that accept the card, further integrating Roblox’s creator economy into real-world transactions.
Roblox continues to cement its role as a significant game and creator platform, with over $5 billion earned by developers since 2013 and $1.7 billion in the past year alone. CEO David Baszucki highlighted the community’s engagement, noting that players spent over 29 billion hours on Roblox across 180 countries in the last quarter. These innovations in AI tools, cross-platform access, and financial services signal Roblox’s commitment to not just attracting users to its platform but also empowering creators and expanding the reach and utility of their games.
