Amazon Prime Video takes on TikTok with short-form news clips

Amazon Prime Video is expanding its news content offerings by introducing short-form, on-demand news clips featuring both local and national stories. These clips will be accessible on televisions and other living room devices initially, with plans to expand availability to the web and mobile apps soon. This new content will appear in the News section of the Prime Video app, within areas like Trending Topics and Local News carousels, complementing the existing news coverage from multiple providers offered across the U.S. without requiring a Prime subscription.

The move reflects Amazon’s strategy to compete with platforms like TikTok, which have become popular for short-form video content, especially among younger audiences seeking news. While TikTok is known primarily for entertainment, it has grown into a significant source of news for Gen Z viewers who prefer quick, engaging clips often presented by creators and influencers. Amazon aims to capture this demographic by integrating similar short-form news content into Prime Video, even though it does not have a dedicated social media platform.

Amazon has not yet disclosed whether the mobile news clips will adopt a vertical video format common on TikTok and Instagram, but they confirmed the content will be short-form on iOS and Android devices. The appeal of short-form news among younger audiences lies not just in brevity but in an organic, less polished style, which Amazon will need to consider to succeed. This trend has prompted other major streamers such as Peacock, HBO Max, Netflix, and Disney+ to also add short-form video clips to their services over the past several months.

This expansion is part of a broader industry effort to meet changing viewer habits, where more people—especially younger viewers—consume news and entertainment in bite-sized pieces rather than long formats. By adding short-form news clips, Amazon hopes to engage audiences looking for quick news updates in easily digestible formats, keeping pace with competitors and evolving digital media consumption trends.
