Netflix is marking 15 years of operation in Mexico by launching a diverse slate of 15 new local productions spanning films, TV series, documentaries, and reality shows. Since its entry into the Mexican market, Netflix has transformed the way audiences access content by providing on-demand global programming and establishing Mexico as a significant international production hub. The company’s local investment intensified with the 2015 debut of "Club de Cuervos," Netflix's first original series made outside the U.S., and expanded further with its Mexico City offices opening in 2019 to support Latin American content growth.
Over the past decade, Netflix has been a major economic driver in Mexico’s entertainment industry, producing over 200 titles in partnership with 50 local production companies and shooting in more than 100 cities. This activity has contributed approximately $2.7 billion to Mexico’s GDP and created employment for over 15,000 crew members and 20,000 extras. The streamer is currently in the midst of a $1 billion investment plan aimed at Mexican productions, underscoring its commitment to fostering local talent and stories.
Netflix’s Latin American expansion has already delivered major global successes, including hits like "Club de Cuervos," "La Casa de las Flores," and "Oscuro Deseo." The streamer also received critical acclaim with Alfonso Cuarón’s "Roma," which won three Academy Awards in 2019. Other notable productions include Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s "Bardo," Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning "Pinocchio," and the recent adaptation of "Pedro Páramo," which boosted local interest in the iconic novel while significantly impacting the economy.
The new slate of 15 Mexican titles announced for this anniversary showcases a wide variety of genres and storytelling styles, highlighting Mexico’s rich creative diversity. These productions range from the disaster drama "Contra el huracán" and political thriller "El enemigo del pueblo" to the action sequel "Contraataque" and the documentary "Canelo Álvarez," about the famed boxer. This ambitious lineup reflects Netflix’s desire to continue exploring fresh narrative approaches and emerging voices within Mexico’s dynamic entertainment landscape.
