Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed a significant victory at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix held at the new Madring circuit in Madrid, further cementing his lead in the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship. Starting from second on the grid behind pole-sitter Lando Norris of McLaren, Antonelli faced early challenges trying to overtake Norris, including two track excursions. The race dynamic shifted dramatically when Lance Stroll's Aston Martin retirement triggered a virtual safety car (VSC) on lap 15, enabling Antonelli and Max Verstappen to pit under favorable conditions while Norris had to pit later under green flag, losing vital time and positions.

Antonelli’s win marked his eighth victory of the season and his second consecutive race win following a dramatic comeback from 19th place at Monza. He crossed the finish line four seconds ahead of Verstappen, who claimed second, while Norris managed to recover to third place. Despite the win, Antonelli acknowledged that Norris deserved to win based on his strong start, but he was pleased to take the race victory in the expanding 2026 F1 season. This outcome solidified Mercedes’ commanding presence at the top of both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.

Behind the podium finishers, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fourth, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton retired early due to brake failure, hampering Ferrari’s effort. Mercedes’ George Russell took fifth, with Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls stepping in for the injured Isack Hadjar to score sixth. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto was seventh, followed by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad, with Nico Hulkenberg securing the last point for Audi in tenth place. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll registered no points following his retirement.

The championship standings now show Antonelli leading with 292 points, comfortably ahead of teammate George Russell at 211 points. Lewis Hamilton holds third with 191 points, closely followed by Norris at 186 points as they battle for podium positions in the title race. Mercedes dominates the constructors’ championship with 503 points, trailed by Ferrari's 358 and McLaren's 306. The F1 season moves on to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku scheduled for September 24-26, with competitors eager to close the gaps before the Asian leg begins.
