Meta has introduced a new feature allowing AI agents to manage the setup and administration of WhatsApp Business messaging. This development, announced on September 15, 2026, streamlines what was previously a complex process requiring developers to navigate multiple tools including the Developer Console, Meta’s Business Manager, and API references. Now, developers can simply interact with AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT, directing them via chat to complete business messaging setups.

This advancement is powered by the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a Model Context Protocol server that connects AI agents directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform. The MCP server expands Meta’s existing network of MCPs, which had focused on ads management and app configuration, to now include business onboarding on WhatsApp. This move aligns Meta with other tech giants like PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, and Microsoft that offer MCP servers to facilitate secure AI interactions with their services.

The AI agents significantly reduce manual tasks by handling activities such as creating WhatsApp Business accounts, verifying phone numbers, registering access to the Cloud API, and ensuring compliance with business terms. Businesses can also request the AI to design or modify messaging templates, test communications and webhooks, and monitor critical aspects like Terms of Service adherence, payment setup, and Business Verification, which were previously prone to unnoticed failures.

Additionally, throughout the configuration process, Meta’s Social Technologies MCP server remains available to help developers discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot any errors. This launch complements Meta’s broader strategy to integrate AI more deeply into its business tools ecosystem, coinciding with the rollout of its new AI-focused subscription plans, as the company continues to enhance automation and developer experience on its platforms.
