In response to the EU's proposal, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning, threatening to impose tariffs on the European Union or potentially halt trade with the bloc if the associate membership is formalized. He criticized Canada's trade relationship with the United States, calling it "terrible," and labeled the EU's move as a possible "hostile act." Trump's threat adds tension to already strained North American trade relations, particularly after his administration imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian imports and plans bans on Canadian dairy, alcohol, and auto products.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, present during von der Leyen’s address in Strasbourg, has expressed Ottawa’s desire for a "unique security and economic alliance" with Europe rather than full EU membership. Canada is concurrently working to lessen its economic dependence on the U.S., a goal accelerated by the recent breakdown in bilateral trade negotiations. The EU-Canada relationship already benefits from deals such as the free trade agreement and Canada’s participation in the EU SAFE program, which facilitates access to European defense procurement.

The EU member states have yet to officially respond to President Trump's threats, and Brussels has not confirmed whether it will proceed with the associate membership plan amid growing diplomatic pressures.
