GM launching new customer software experience with redesigned Chevy, GMC pickups

General Motors is introducing a revamped vehicle infotainment system starting later this year, debuting with the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. The new software aims to provide a more intuitive and smartphone-like experience for drivers, emphasizing convenience and customization. This upgrade reflects GM's response to the increasing digitalization of vehicles, with a focus on improving how drivers interact with both GM’s native software and third-party systems.

The redesign also involves a strategic organizational shift at GM, placing its digital experience operations under a design-led approach. Sebastian Bauer, a former executive from Apple and Google now heading GM's human interface design, emphasized that the goal is to reduce cognitive load for drivers by proactively presenting relevant controls and information. This means actions such as answering calls or operating garage doors can be executed with fewer screen navigations, enhancing safety and usability on the road.

A significant update accompanies the Super Cruise advanced driver-assistance system, which will now visually display surrounding objects like vehicles and pedestrians on the driver cluster screen. This enhancement aims to improve driver awareness during hands-free driving situations by making the vehicle's surroundings more visible, an area where GM's previous versions lagged behind some competitors. The overall software overhaul also includes improved integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, featuring a "window-in-window" design that allows these systems to operate alongside GM’s native software without overtaking the entire infotainment display.

GM acknowledged that infotainment and connectivity have historically been weak points in vehicle reliability, as highlighted in industry studies such as J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. The new system intends to address these issues by fostering smoother cooperation with tech giants Apple and Google. Although initially launched on Silverado and Sierra trucks, GM plans to gradually extend this advanced infotainment experience to a wider range of its vehicles, though specific timelines have not been disclosed.
