X will now let US users trade via Cashtags

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has introduced a new feature called Cashtag to enable U.S. users to trade stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies directly from their timelines. Partnering with brokerages including Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase, X leverages its longstanding $-symbol ticker system, initially created by the financial platform Stocktwits in 2008 for tracking market conversations. Now, instead of just monitoring discussions, users can tap on Cashtags to access live asset charts, related posts, and execute trades seamlessly through their brokerage accounts.

This integration is part of X’s expanding financial services under the X Money umbrella, which aims to bridge the gap between social market discussions and actual trading. According to Mridul Singhai, X’s Product Engineering lead, the feature allows users to move effortlessly from observing market chatter to taking action. When users press “Trade” on a Cashtag, they are directed to their chosen brokerage’s platform to log in or sign up and complete the transaction without leaving the social media environment.

Monique Pintarelli, head of Global Advertising at SpaceXAI, highlighted that this new capability connects financial conversations with immediate decision-making, reflecting X’s broader goal of enabling real-time interaction around topics important to users. However, the feature also raises concerns about potential market manipulation risks, as AI-driven bots, spammers, and malicious actors might exploit the platform to influence trading behavior. Despite these worries, market tinkering via social media discussions has already been an issue on X before Cashtag trading was introduced.

Overall, X’s Cashtag trading represents a significant step in merging social media with financial activity, offering users direct pathways to trade assets from within a widely used communication platform. With broker partners in place and the feature live for U.S. customers, X is positioning itself as a more comprehensive hub for both market information and execution, reflecting the evolving intersection of finance and social networking in 2026.
