The FAA’s plan to fix air traffic? $875M worth of AI

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is addressing the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers by investing $875 million in a new artificial intelligence software program. This program, named SMART—Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories—is designed to assist controllers by streamlining air traffic operations and managing complex workflows. The system analyzes data such as airline schedules, weather conditions, airport capacity, and airspace constraints to predict traffic flows and prevent potential conflicts before they arise.

SMART has been developed by a company called Air Space Intelligence and is described as a cloud-based platform that enhances existing FAA air traffic management infrastructure. The initial rollout will take place in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, with plans to expand to other regions over the coming years. The FAA anticipates that the implementation of AI-driven assistance tools like SMART will improve safety and efficiency in the national airspace.

This AI initiative complements the FAA's recent hiring push aimed at eliminating the shortage of air traffic controllers, a problem attributed to multiple factors including retirements and increased workload. The agency is also engaged in efforts to modernize its aging air traffic control systems more broadly. Together, these programs reflect the FAA’s commitment to leveraging technology and workforce growth to address capacity and safety challenges in the skies.

The investment in SMART reflects a 12-year plan to transform air traffic management, with the FAA recognizing advanced technologies as essential for handling increasing flight volumes while maintaining high safety standards. By integrating AI tools into its operations, the FAA hopes to reduce delays, optimize routing, and enhance decision support for controllers managing America's complex airspace network.
