The United Nations has partnered with Google to enhance the accessibility and usability of its extensive global data through AI systems. This initiative, called the UN System Data Commons, leverages Google’s open-source Data Commons platform to allow users to query statistics across various UN agencies using natural language. It replaces the older UNData portal with a more AI-friendly interface and supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables AI models to connect directly to trusted external data sources. The goal is to make UN data AI-ready, improving reliability and transparency, with 20 agencies’ data available at launch and a target to include 80% of UN statistical datasets by 2027.

The collaboration was driven in part by UNICEF’s research highlighting weaknesses in current AI models’ ability to deliver accurate global development indicators. Testing six leading large language models — including versions from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google — revealed an average accuracy rate of just 21.2%, with many responses lacking usable data or consistency. As AI usage surges, UNICEF also noted a 67% increase in traffic from generative AI assistants to its data website in 2026, underscoring the rising dependence on AI for accessing development statistics and the importance of trustworthy data sources.

Google.org contributed $2 million in funding and technical support to build the core infrastructure of the UN System Data Commons, which is run on a UN-governed platform intended for future autonomous operation by the UN. The platform maintains traceability of each statistic’s origin, ensuring data authenticity when accessed by AI. Demonstrations showed that AI connected through MCP can autonomously aggregate multiple indicators, generate visual data summaries, and compose analyses, streamlining complex data tasks. Nonetheless, experts caution that humans must still review AI-generated outputs to verify accuracy and interpret nuanced information.

This partnership reflects a broader trend to address the challenges of integrating authoritative data with AI capabilities. By making data more structured, accessible, and standardized via MCP, the UN aims to improve the precision of AI-driven insights on global development. This move will help researchers, policymakers, and the public better harness AI tools supported by reliable international statistics, advancing evidence-based decision-making in an era of rapidly expanding AI usage.
