Two months after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) head coach Mauricio Pochettino is initiating a new phase focused on youth development. Targeting upcoming major tournaments like the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2030 World Cup, Pochettino unveiled a roster that skews significantly younger than the World Cup squad. This 28-player group averages just under 23 years old, nearly four years younger than the previous team, and includes eight teenagers. Notably, 12 players have never been capped before and many qualify for the U-23 Olympic squad, signaling a clear shift toward nurturing future stars.

Pochettino emphasized that this move represents “a fresh start” and a departure from relying on past achievements when selecting players. Despite the experience of some veterans, the coach insists on evaluating talent based on current performance and style. He highlighted that football is about the present and that the new cycle aims to build a team dynamic that reflects today’s game. Upcoming friendlies against Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada provide an immediate opportunity for the promising young squad to prove their capacity on the international stage.

Among the new faces, 16-year-old Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan stands out as a particularly exciting prospect. Recently named MLS Player of the Matchday after a strong showing with two goals and one assist, Sullivan has accumulated 9 goals and 15 assists this year across all competitions. Pochettino praised Sullivan’s talent and potential, noting the importance of supporting his growth and maturity as he begins his international journey. If Sullivan debuts in the upcoming matches, he would become the second-youngest player in USMNT history, following Freddy Adu’s record set in 2006.

Having secured a four-year contract extension in August to continue as head coach, Pochettino embraces the challenge of this transition.
