Flock Safety, the surveillance technology company specializing in license plate recognition, is reportedly offering what it describes as its most generous severance packages yet in an effort to reduce its workforce voluntarily. According to a recent report from Wired, the company expects a significant number of its approximately 1,500 employees to consider these buyouts, with plans to approve most requests. This approach aims to minimize forced layoffs while allowing staff who may be disheartened by recent controversies to depart on their own terms.

The company has faced mounting challenges amidst backlash over its technology's misuse, particularly regarding law enforcement officers using Flock’s tools to stalk intimate partners. A Washington Post investigation identified at least 46 instances of alleged misuse connected to such misconduct. Additionally, several states, including Florida and Texas, have discontinued their use of Flock cameras over privacy concerns. Advocacy groups also report that around 90 municipalities terminated contracts with Flock in August alone, a sharp increase from previous months.

Flock’s CEO Garrett Langley recently acknowledged in an All-In podcast interview that the reputational damage from these events has greatly impacted internal morale. The voluntary separation packages appear to be a strategic move to allow the company to downsize while maintaining a semblance of goodwill among employees. Without this buyout option, it is believed that Flock would be forced to implement involuntary layoffs to adjust its operations.
