Google will now disclose which ads are made with AI

Google is introducing a new feature to disclose when ads are created or edited using AI technology. This move aims to enhance transparency by informing users if generative AI tools have been involved in the production of advertisements they encounter across Google Search, YouTube, and Google Discover. The information will be accessible through the "My Ad Center" panel, where users can click on options to understand more about the ad, including a specifically labeled “how this ad was made” section indicating the use of AI.

The feature automatically applies disclosures to ads made with Google’s proprietary generative AI advertising tools. For ads created with AI tools outside of Google's platform, advertisers will manually indicate AI involvement using a new control. Google does not independently verify these disclosures but will comply with local laws in markets where AI labeling is mandated. Until now, Google had only required such disclosures for election ads, marking this as an extension of its policy to other advertising categories.

This update arrives as AI-generated content becomes increasingly common in marketing, helping businesses reduce costs on product photography and streamline ad creation through synthetic images or digital editing. However, concerns over potential misleading effects persist, making clear disclosure a key step for consumer trust. Google’s initiative reflects growing demands for transparency in AI applications within commerce and advertising sectors.

Overall, the new transparency tool in Google’s ad experience bolsters consumer awareness about AI’s role in ad creation. It empowers viewers to better evaluate the authenticity of promotional content and aligns Google with emerging best practices in AI ethics. For businesses, it establishes clearer guidelines on ad labeling, balancing innovation and accountability as AI-generated ads gain prominence.
