Instagram users: Here’s how to stop Meta’s AI from using your photos

Meta recently introduced Muse Image, an AI image-generation tool integrated within its apps that enables users to create or edit images using photos from public Instagram accounts. This feature allows anyone to tag a public account and incorporate its photos into AI-generated content. However, private accounts and users under 18 are automatically excluded. The new capability has prompted concerns over user consent and privacy because people might not realize their photos could be repurposed by others without notification.

To address these concerns, Instagram provides a way for users to opt out of having their public photos used in Muse Image creations. Users can disable this feature by navigating to their profile settings, selecting "Sharing and reuse," and then toggling off the option to allow AI usage of their content on both posts and reels. This opt-out gives users more control over how their images are leveraged by AI tools on the platform.

The release of Muse Image comes amid increasing widespread integration of AI functionalities in social media, a trend that has sparked calls for stronger privacy safeguards and transparency. Many users remain wary of AI’s expanding role, with a recent Pew Research Center survey showing that a significant portion of the public feels more apprehensive than excited about AI’s growing presence. The potential for misuse, including harassment or manipulation, has heightened demand for clearer guidelines on AI content usage.

Meta’s history with user privacy adds to the skepticism surrounding this new AI feature. The company was fined $5 billion by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in 2019 following revelations that user data had been improperly accessed, exemplified by the Cambridge Analytica scandal affecting millions. These past issues feed current concerns about how Meta handles consent and data protection in the evolving landscape of AI-powered media tools.
