Junior Caminero, Yandy Diaz Among Tampa Bay Rays Who Were With Cleveland

Several Tampa Bay Rays players facing the Cleveland Guardians in the 2026 American League Championship Series have roots with Cleveland. Third baseman Junior Caminero was signed by Cleveland in 2019 before being traded to Tampa Bay in November 2021 for pitcher Tobias Myers. Caminero made a strong impression early on, leading the Dominican Summer League with nine homers in 2021 and becoming one of the few players since 1900 with multiple 40-home run seasons before age 23. His combined 87 home runs and 211 RBIs over the 2025 and 2026 seasons highlight his emerging star power.

Yandy Diaz was acquired by the Rays in a complex three-team trade in December 2018. At the time, Diaz had minimal power production with Cleveland but was regarded by Tampa Bay’s baseball operations team as having the potential to become a potent hitter by elevating the ball more often. Since joining the Rays, the two-time All-Star has proven that assessment accurate, winning a batting title in 2023 with a .330 average and maintaining an .818 OPS across 970 games, including a career-best 22 homers in 2026.

Reliever Kevin Kelly, also a former Cleveland draft pick, has been a key part of the Rays’ bullpen since arriving in 2022 via the Rule 5 draft. Known for his unusual arm angle and effective changeup, Kelly posted a 2.44 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over a career-high 71 appearances in 2026. Another Cleveland alum, Richie Palacios, was acquired from the Cardinals in early 2024 and had a strong September showing in 2026, batting .283 with five homers. Meanwhile, reliever Cole Sulser was also brought over from Cleveland in the 2018 trade involving Diaz and has maintained a solid 2.94 ERA during his time with Tampa Bay.

Manager Kevin Cash has a unique tie to Cleveland beyond these players, having served as the bullpen coach under Terry Francona for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. A Tampa native, Cash praised the Cleveland organization for its professionalism and the support he received during his tenure there. The upcoming ALCS matchup thus features several Rays with Cleveland connections, adding an intriguing personal dimension to the series starting Monday night at Tropicana Field.
