Ollama, the popular open source AI developer tool, has successfully closed a $65 million Series B funding round led by Theory Ventures, bringing its total funding to $88 million. Founded by Jeff Morgan and Michael Chiang, the company launched in 2023 to help developers easily run open-weight AI models on their personal computers within minutes. Recognized widely by the developer community, Ollama has gained significant traction with nearly 9 million monthly users and substantial engagement on GitHub, boasting 176,000 stars and close to 17,000 forks.
The founders’ experience with Docker, a container technology for cloud computing, heavily influenced Ollama’s approach, aiming to simplify AI model deployment in a way similar to how Docker streamlined app portability between environments. Jeff Morgan notes that before Ollama, open models released in 2023 were challenging for programmers to use, being more researcher-focused. Ollama’s solution makes these models accessible and easy to run locally on developers’ machines, a capability now adopted by 85% of Fortune 500 companies despite the startup’s small team of just 14 employees.
Ollama’s service extends beyond local usage by offering access to larger, more complex AI models hosted on its “neocloud,” available under various subscription plans that range from free to $100 per month. This cloud component has sparked some pushback within the community, as some users expressed concern it might detract from the project’s open source ethos. However, Morgan explains that this cloud aspect is a natural evolution to accommodate models too large to run on personal devices, maintaining the core desktop product free and open as a discovery and local hosting tool.
Industry observers like Benchmark’s Peter Fenton emphasize the growing importance of open-weight AI models for enterprises facing high inference costs, viewing Ollama’s platform as a crucial player in this transition. The rise of Ollama reflects a broader trend where open source AI tools evolve into venture-backed companies, fueling innovation and competition alongside closed-source AI providers. As open models become more capable and affordable, Ollama positions itself as a key enabler for developers and enterprises seeking flexible, cost-effective AI solutions.
