Figma has announced the acquisition of the team behind Bud, a startup known for its vibe-coding platform and AI agent technology. Originally named Orchids, Bud allowed users to quickly develop apps for various platforms such as mobile, web, and Slack. Over time, the company transitioned into providing AI-powered agents capable of coding, browsing, and automation. The deal requires Bud and Orchids to cease operations by July 18, with users asked to migrate their projects before the shutdown.

Bud was initially backed by Y Combinator and sought to simplify app creation through its innovative platform. Despite its potential, earlier this year the BBC highlighted security vulnerabilities affecting apps built on Orchids. This development underscores the challenges in balancing rapid development capabilities with robust security features. Figma has not disclosed how it plans to integrate Bud’s expertise but its recent moves suggest a focus on deepening coding and prototyping capabilities within its design ecosystem.

Figma has evolved beyond a traditional design tool by incorporating AI and integration with programming aids. Last year, it released Figma Make, enabling users to create web applications directly on its platform. In 2026, Figma expanded its AI partnerships with OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code, while launching its own AI assistants. These developments signal Figma’s ambition to provide comprehensive tools that support the entire product development lifecycle, from ideation to deployment.
