Chevy built an all-American EV truck — why is nobody buying it?

Chevrolet’s Silverado EV is a well-crafted electric pickup that impresses with its spacious interior, sizable cargo and frunk capacity, advanced driver-assistance features, and impressive range of over 400 miles on a full charge. The truck combines the utility expected of a full-size pickup with a smooth, almost car-like driving experience, supported by a large 205 kWh battery pack and rear-wheel steering. Its infotainment system, powered by Google, offers modern functionality including effective voice commands and a hands-free driving mode called Super Cruise. Despite all these features, the Silverado EV has struggled to gain traction in the market, with sales significantly lagging behind its gasoline counterpart.

The design of the Silverado EV is reminiscent of the older Chevy Avalanche, featuring a short bed with an extension capability into the cabin and a distinctive “sail” between the cab and bed aimed at improving aerodynamics. While the truck’s spaciousness and comfort are praised, buyers may hesitate due to its size and certain styling choices. The Silverado EV’s advanced driver aids like Super Cruise perform well overall but have moments of uncertainty in complex traffic situations. The drive experience is notably efficient, yielding mileage comparable to smaller luxury EVs, which underlines the engineers’ success in balancing size and efficiency.

Price and functionality considerations might also explain the slow adoption of the Silverado EV. Its cost is close to the average transaction price for full-size pickups in the U.S., and although it offers a compelling range, its towing capacity is about 60% lower than conventional pickups. However, data shows most truck owners tow infrequently, which theoretically reduces the impact of this limitation. The bigger challenges seem rooted in consumer hesitation about EV infrastructure, range anxiety, and the inertia of traditional vehicle preferences, hindering not only Chevy but the wider EV truck market.

To address these obstacles, GM is reportedly working on a new battery chemistry, lithium-manganese-rich (LMR), that would lower production costs by roughly $6,000 while maintaining range. This advancement could bring the Silverado EV’s price closer to that of gasoline trucks, potentially boosting appeal. Improvements in weight reduction and performance may also enhance towing and payload capabilities. As Chevy refines its electric truck offerings, the Silverado EV represents an important early step in electrifying the American pickup segment, even if widespread consumer acceptance remains a work in progress.
