Blue Jays’ $32 Million Disappointment Signs With New Team After Brutal Season

The Toronto Blue Jays faced a tough 2026 season, finishing with a 79-83 record, marking a sharp fall from their previous year as reigning American League champions. The team struggled particularly with injuries that disrupted their pitching staff and ongoing offensive issues, resulting in last place in the AL East. Looking ahead to the offseason, the Blue Jays are focusing on rebuilding and strengthening their roster to return to a competitive position next year.

One of the bright spots from past seasons, veteran relief pitcher Yariel Rodriguez, experienced a difficult year in 2026, struggling with a 7.71 ERA over just ten appearances due to a back injury. Consequently, the Blue Jays designated Rodriguez for assignment midseason. Despite these challenges, Rodriguez remains under contract for one more year of his five-year, $32 million deal, with a conditional player option in 2028.

In an effort to regain his form and prove his value, Rodriguez has signed with the Indios de Mayaguez in the Puerto Rico Winter League. This move offers him an opportunity to pitch consistent innings and showcase his health and skills outside of Major League Baseball. Rodriguez’s previous success included a 3.08 ERA in 66 games during the Blue Jays' championship season, raising hopes that winter ball could be a path back to effectiveness.

Rodriguez, 29, originally joined Toronto in 2024 after pitching in Japan and was alternated between starting and relieving roles. His overall Blue Jays tenure includes 97 appearances with a 4.05 ERA. With the upcoming season uncertain, the winter league stint could help him rebuild momentum for a potential comeback in MLB, aligning with the Blue Jays' broader plans for roster improvement as they address their recent setbacks.
