Xavier Ochsner College Of Medicine, The Nation's Fifth Historically Black Medical Institution, Receives Preliminary Accreditation To Address Physician Shortage

Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, established in 2024, has achieved preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), enabling it to admit its first class of medical students in 2027. Located in the New Orleans BioDistrict, this college is the nation’s fifth historically Black medical school and the only one in the Gulf South region. Its foundation represents a partnership between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health, combining academic excellence with practical medical training focused on preparing students for impactful careers in healthcare.

The accreditation process saw the college earn candidate status in 2025, with an official LCME visit in June 2026 confirming it met rigorous standards for preliminary accreditation. This milestone is significant not only for the institution but also for the broader goal of addressing critical healthcare disparities. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) like Xavier train nearly 70% of Black physicians in the U.S., who are statistically more likely to serve underserved communities, making the college’s mission essential to improving health outcomes in areas with acute medical needs.

The college will play a vital role in tackling the nationwide shortage of physicians, which the Health Resources and Services Administration projects will top 141,000 by 2038. Louisiana, where the school is based, is one of the states most impacted by this shortage. Xavier University President Reynold Verret emphasized the school’s role in expanding opportunities for aspiring Black physicians and strengthening communities that rely heavily on skilled healthcare professionals, framing the college as a transformative force in health education and equity.

This collaboration between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health builds on a century-long legacy of service and academic distinction at Xavier University. The new medical school not only extends this legacy but also signals a strategic investment in the future of medicine by broadening access and inclusivity within the medical profession. With preliminary accreditation secured, the college is poised to shape healthcare for future generations, reaffirming education as a means to improve both individual lives and national well-being.
