Rapper Ja Rule is currently raising between $5 million and $7 million in funding to grow his whiskey brand, Amber & Opal. The brand was co-founded alongside longtime friends Herb Rice, Sandy Sandiford, and Kelvin Barton, who initially invested in whiskey barrels with the intent to sell them later for profit. However, as they gained a deeper understanding of the industry, they shifted their vision to create a whiskey brand that brings cultural diversity and inclusiveness into the traditionally exclusive whiskey market.
Amber & Opal Whiskey offers a unique product—a honey botanical whiskey crafted with rye, orange blossom honey, and various teas—which marks a departure from the barrels they originally purchased. Those barrels will instead be used for a premium bourbon planned for the future. Currently priced at $69.99 online, the whiskey is available in seven markets, including Maryland and Florida, allowing the founders to maintain hands-on involvement in the brand’s growth.
Despite the option to quickly expand into 238 stores, Ja Rule and his partners are deliberately limiting distribution to maintain a sense of scarcity around the brand. This cautious approach is designed to foster long-term sustainability rather than pursuing a rapid nationwide launch. The founders believe that their product appeals to a broad audience, including people of color, women, and newcomers curious about whiskey, driving future sales growth fueled by curiosity and cultural engagement.
The capital raised will be used to hire exceptional talent and support expansion efforts anticipated within the next year. The team emphasizes legacy building, aiming to establish a brand that can endure for decades. This strategic move signifies their commitment to not only scaling the business but also ensuring that Amber & Opal Whiskey becomes a lasting, recognizable name in the spirits industry.
