Two Bidders Pull Ahead in Seahawks Sale Process

The Seattle Seahawks’ ownership sale process has narrowed to two leading bidders, sources reveal to Front Office Sports. One group includes current Boston Celtics minority owner Aditya Mittal and former Celtics governor Wyc Grousbeck, while the other is led by Vinod Khosla, a minority investor in the San Francisco 49ers. Notably, one of these groups includes a former Seahawks player, though their identity and group affiliation remain undisclosed. Some insiders believe it is down to these two groups, but there remains a possibility of a latecomer entering the bidding, reminiscent of the Los Angeles Clippers sale in 2014.

Interest in the 2026 Super Bowl champion Seahawks has been reported as mixed, with some sources suggesting less enthusiasm than expected, while NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has publicly denied the notion that demand is soft. Several high-profile potential buyers, including Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos and sports mogul Todd Boehly, have exited the race. Apostolopoulos had denied interest previously despite rumors, while Boehly, co-owner of the Dodgers, Lakers, and Chelsea FC, is also no longer in consideration, paring down the current field of bidders.

Financially, the Seahawks’ sale is anticipated to set a new record, potentially fetching between $8 billion and $10 billion or more, surpassing the $6.05 billion sale of the Washington Commanders in 2023. Valuations of NFL franchises have surged recently, highlighted by the New York Giants’ minority stake sale valuing the team around $10 billion and the Miami Dolphins’ 1% stake purchase at a $12.5 billion valuation. Experts like Irwin Kishner predict the Seahawks could reach approximately $9.5 billion, signaling a landmark transaction in sports franchise sales.

Key figures involved bring substantial financial muscle and sports experience to the bidding. Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, reportedly worth nearly $14 billion, would need to divest his 49ers stake if successful. The Grousbeck family has a net worth around $2.2 billion, while Mittal, CEO of steel giant ArcelorMittal, is part of a family worth more than $17 billion; he also contributed $1 billion to the Celtics’ $6.1 billion sale in 2025. The Paul G. Allen Estate, which owns the Seahawks, has remained silent on the details of the sale’s progress as bidders await updates expected in August.
