Chiefs Defense Finally Records Sacks In Impressive Effort Vs. Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense broke a streak of zero sacks since their season opener by recording four sacks in a commanding 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. This win improved the Chiefs to a perfect 5-0 record, keeping them as the only undefeated team in the AFC. Despite criticism earlier in the season about their inability to pressure quarterbacks, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo emphasized that he prioritized limiting points and securing wins, goals the Chiefs defense clearly achieved by holding the Chargers to just six points and 259 total yards.

The sacks came at a critical time, including back-to-back plays late in the fourth quarter when defensive back Chamarri Conner and defensive end George Karlaftis forced significant losses on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. This displayed a marked improvement from their 2025 season, when the Chiefs’ defense struggled to generate pressure despite blitzing. Head coach Andy Reid expressed relief at finally showing this level of defensive disruption after persistent questions from the media.

However, the impressive defensive performance must be viewed with consideration of the Chargers’ very depleted lineup. Los Angeles, winless at 0-6, started four rookie offensive linemen and lost key wide receiver Ladd McConkey early in the game due to a concussion. The Chargers were lacking critical protection on the line, including their top draft pick Joe Alt and highly paid tackle Rashawn Slater, both sidelined by injury. Coach Reid noted the severe injury toll affecting the Chargers as one of the toughest he has seen.

Looking ahead, the Chiefs understand the competition will become tougher, and their defensive front needs to build on this momentum to continue generating pressure. Karlaftis underscored the importance of sacking quarterbacks "by any means necessary" as the season progresses. With this breakthrough performance, the Chiefs defense could start living up to its aggressive reputation, crucial for maintaining their undefeated status and contending deep into the season.
