Mets Veteran Shortstop Cuts Ties With Team Shortly After Disappointing Season

The New York Mets concluded a challenging 2026 season with a disappointing 74-88 record, missing the postseason for the second consecutive year. This outcome places the team in a pivotal offseason phase, with President of Baseball Operations David Stearns tasked to evaluate the roster and address depth issues and various performance gaps. Although a massive roster overhaul like the previous year is unlikely, some retooling is considered necessary to position the Mets for a better 2027 campaign.

One of the earliest moves of the offseason centers on infielder Vidal Brujan, who formally elected free agency in mid-October after a tumultuous stint with the Mets. Brujan joined the organization in January after the Minnesota Twins designated him for assignment, only to spend most of the season oscillating between the major league roster and Triple-A Syracuse. Despite a brief opportunity in the majors, prompted by an injury to Francisco Lindor, Brujan struggled to secure a permanent spot and was designated for assignment in June before finishing out the season in the minors.

Brujan’s departure underscores the Mets’ larger challenge of improving depth and consistency within the infield. At 28, Brujan offers defensive versatility and switch-hitting capability, traits that could appeal to another club seeking affordable utility infield options. However, his inability to demonstrate sustained major league-level success while with the Mets suggests that he will need to perform more consistently to carve out a regular role elsewhere.

For the Mets, Brujan’s exit is just one element of a much broader roster reset. David Stearns faces complex decisions as the organization looks to stem its slide out of contention and strengthen key areas without undertaking a wholesale rebuild. This offseason will test how well the Mets balance making strategic moves for impact players while also ensuring that supporting players earn and justify their roster spots heading into 2027.
