Fox, Telemundo Still Win Big Despite USMNT, Mexico World Cup Exits

Fox and Telemundo are poised to emerge successful from the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup despite the early eliminations of the U.S. men’s national team and Mexico, two of their biggest viewership draws. The U.S. team was defeated 4-1 by Belgium in the round of 16, followed by Mexico's loss to England in the same stage. These exits removed key audiences, prompting Fox announcer John Strong to encourage viewers to continue watching the tournament and supporting soccer beyond the World Cup.

The networks have already capitalized on record-setting viewership during the group stages and the round of 32, which featured historic audience numbers. Nearly all matches—96 out of 104—had been played by the conclusion of the round of 16, meaning most broadcast volume and revenue gains had already been secured. Industry insiders noted that Fox and Telemundo had conservatively projected both the U.S. and Mexican teams to advance only as far as the round of 32, so their deeper runs would have been a financial bonus.

Advertising sales contribute significantly to network revenue, but an equally important income source for Fox and Telemundo is the broadcast retransmission fees paid by pay-TV providers irrespective of which teams advance. This financial structure shields the networks from the full impact of the teams’ early exits. Furthermore, Telemundo continues to feature strong viewership prospects with remaining popular teams like Spain, Argentina, and Colombia still competing in the tournament.

Patrick Crakes, president of Crakes Media, summarized the situation by stating that the World Cup has largely met Fox and Telemundo’s financial expectations early on, putting the networks in solid shape heading into the final matches. The upcoming financial reports for the parent companies are expected to reflect the tournament’s overall success. While the absence of the U.S. and Mexican teams is disappointing, both broadcasters have secured much of their anticipated benefit from one of the most watched World Cups in recent history.
